Is there a difference between gingivitis and periodontitis? In short, yes. While they’re often confused with each other, gingivitis and periodontitis are not indistinguishable. Both are typically due to your dental hygiene not being quite up to par but luckily can be helped by a visit to your dentist.
The Difference Between Gingivitis & Periodontitis
The difference between gingivitis and periodontitis is that they come one after the other. Periodontitis is the latter form of gingivitis, evolving only after gingivitis has been left untreated for a long period of time. There are warning signs and treatment methods for both forms of gum disease that you should be aware of.
Gingivitis
Put simply, gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, especially the gum area surrounding the teeth. This is the most mild form of gum disease and also the most frequently seen by dentists. The easiest way to prevent yourself from getting gingivitis is to practice good oral hygiene–brushing and flossing regularly. Symptoms of gingivitis include swollen, red or puffy gums, or excessively bad breath.
Periodontitis
If gingivitis is left untreated, eventually it evolves into periodontitis. Those suffering from periodontitis will notice some of their teeth starting to loosen as well as their gums beginning to recede from their teeth. While it is more difficult, periodontitis is treatable. Your dentist will be able to tell you what your options are if you find yourself in this situation.
