Taking The Worry Out Your Dental Visit

For some people, going to the dentist is the last thing they want to do. They have no pleasant associations with trips to the dentist. This leads many people to neglect visiting the family dentist once they reach adulthood. This is also why so many adults develop serious dental issues later on in life.

The most important aspect of keeping your mouth healthy is regular dental exams and cleanings. The problem is that you have to go to the dentist to get them, which won’t happen if you avoid the dentist at all costs. Duffield Dentistry understands that going to the dentist is stressful for some people. That is why we take steps to relieve your dental anxiety about your office visits.

We try to take things slow. We don't ever want to have somebody uncomfortable and I realize what it's like to be a dental phobic, so I think we've converted quite a few of them. If some people aren't able to get over their fears, we do sedation dentistry, so they're able to be basically put out while their dentistry's being done. And even with that being the case, some of the patients after a while start saying, “you know, I don't know if I need the sedation dentistry anymore.” I think we've really transformed some patients from, I think it's a fear of the unknown or a bad dental experience, and I think most of them come from bad dental experiences. So once they've realized, it's not going to hurt, they're in good hands, it's going to be quality dentistry, it relieves a lot of their fears and then over time they're able to relax and not be a dental phobic anymore.

Nervous At The Dental Office

For many of our patients, the anxiety does not set in until they are already in the office. The staff at Duffield Dentistry knows this, and we have several options available to help relieve your dental anxiety.

To set you at ease during your time with us, we can provide headphones to allow you to drown out the noise of the office. The headphones can be used to listen to soothing music or sounds on your phone while you wait for your procedure to begin.

The staff is also trained to help you feel as comfortable as possible during your time in our office. Our calming demeanor and soothing actions will help relieve the anxious feelings you have in the office. Our team is specially trained to help patients of all ages feel comfortable and relaxed while in our care.

If you are worried about feeling rushed or pressured during your visit, please do not worry. We always make sure you are comfortable with the treatment before beginning the procedure. We also offer longer appointment times to help you feel more at ease. You will be able to take the appointment at your own pace.

In some cases, nitrous oxide sedation can be offered to those who are having anxiety issues. You might know nitrous oxide better as laughing gas. Dr. Duffield will administer a nitrous and oxygen mix to help ease your nerves during treatment. This wears off sufficiently to allow you to drive yourself home after your procedure.

Nervous At Home Before Your Visit

In some cases, dental anxiety over a dental visit is apparent before you even leave your home. In these instances, one of our dentists might consider a conscious sedation option for you. This is where you are sedated but not totally put to sleep. This allows you to participate in the procedure when necessary, but it also allows you to be more at ease with what is going on.

The type of conscious sedation we use at Duffield Dentistry is oral sedation. In order for you to receive this type of sedation, you will need to be at the office at least one hour prior to the start of your appointment. This allows the staff to administer the oral sedative and gives it time to begin to take effect.

Once the sedative has taken effect, your procedure will begin. Oral sedation requires that you have someone available to take you home because the sedative will not have completely worn off by the time your procedure has ended.

Our sedation options are completely safe to use under the supervision of our highly trained team of dental health care professionals. We will monitor your situation closely for the entire length of your visit. Our team will be happy to ensure that you are entirely comfortable and safe throughout the duration of your appointment.
